When Donald Trump rode down his golden escalator and announced his run for the US presidency last summer, few may have recognised the official end of the era of free-trade politics. Mr Trump has made opposition to trade a cornerstone of his successful Republican primary campaign, alongside immigration. For her part, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has likewise denounced the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a landmark trade agreement negotiated by the US, Japan and 10 other nations.
